New NMC regulations would penalise doctors who don’t prescribe generic medications.

According to the new rules set forth by the National Medical Commission (NMC), all doctors are required to prescribe generic medications. If they do not, they may face penalties and their ability to practise medicine may be temporarily terminated.

The NMC urged doctors not to prescribe branded generic medications in its “Regulations relating to Professional Conduct of Registered Medical Practitioners.” Despite the fact that doctors must currently only administer generic medications, the regulations the Indian Medical Council issued in 2002 do not include any penalties.
